Dunkerque started life in the 8th century as a simple fishing harbour. It became famous as a haven for pirates who preyed on shipping in the North Sea.

Today the dunes of Dunkerque make it a seaside resort. The city is remarkably green for a major international port and industrial centre, handling bulk cargoes from all over the world, as well as being a ferry port for cars and freight with many Lorries crossing between the UK and Europe.

The ferry service, launched in May 2000, is run by Norfolk Line ferries and with 3 of the most modern ships on the channel routes, offer up to 10 sailings daily from Dover.

Directions:

From A25 Lille: Join the A16, direction Calais.
From A16 Dunkerque/Belgium: Take exit 24. Follow signs ‘Port Rapide/Car Ferry’.
From St. Omer: The D600 crosses the A16 direct to the Terminal.
From Dunkerque Centre: Follow signs for Calais – either A16 to exit 24 or on RN1 follow signs to ‘Loon Plage/Car Ferry’.
